General Idea

Nostalgia was the main inspiration for this season’s collection by Bumsuk Choi, but while many labels looked to the 1970s, the South Korean designer referenced the eclectic 1980s. In reflecting on this period, he chose to concentrate on the urban young man who wants his personal style to reflect his individuality as well as his creativity. What Bumsuk Choi sent down the runway during his show, titled "Slow", was a collection full of natural colors and hues as well as simple silhouettes in which he attempted to tie them to the theme of nostalgia for childhood. The pieces were basics made of primarily cotton, linen and polyester using neutral colors like beige, khaki, and black with splashes of red and blue scattered throughout the show. Mr Choi presented some interesting interpretations of cobweb sweaters, updated varsity jackets and denim jodhpurs, but a series of brushstroke graffiti-print jackets, shorts and bags unfortunately called to mind an iconic design from a much better-known French luxury brand. Although this collection was a departure from other seasons, the designer continues to ground his aesthetics in a street style that contemporary urban young men want to wear.
